Residents at a Gold Coast aged care community are set to take up brushes, unleash their inner Picasso and paint a wall mural with the help of a local artist.

Odyssey Lifestyle Care Communities will welcome Burleigh-based artist Mari Bray on April 23 to use her signature bright and bold painting style to decorate one of Odyssey’s walls with help from the residents.

Odyssey founder and CEO Phil Usher says the community are excited to get involved in creating something incredibly beautiful that helps bring joy.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing Mari’s mural come to life and it’s something residents, guests and team members will be able to enjoy for years to come,” Mr Usher says.

“Numerous scientific studies show that enriching people’s everyday environment using colour and light can have several psychological and cognitive benefits, especially for the elderly.

“It’s incredibly important that our seniors loved ones feel valued and to provide a sense of purpose and we’re always looking to increase those opportunities at Odyssey, this mural is just one of the many ways we achieve that.”

Japanese Brazilian artist Mari Bray says she was thrilled that Odyssey supported the mural wall when she approached them with the idea.

“I watched a Ted Talk about how vibrant colours in public areas can affect people’s sense of well-being, confidence and positivity and felt inspired to create something special and I immediately though of Odyssey,” Ms Bray says.

“I can’t wait to paint a wall at Odyssey, incorporate my colourful signature elements and get the residents involved in the fun and the creativity of this project.

“Colour in a very primal way is a sign of life, energy and abundance and I often get told my works give people a feeling of joy.

“My aim is to paint 10 colourful walls at hospitals, schools, universities and Odyssey is just the beginning.”

Odyssey is a three-tower luxury lifestyle care community, located at the high-profile site on the corner of Christine Avenue and The Crestway at Robina, and has set a new benchmark for the sector with an extensive offering of five-star accommodation, care services and amenities for residents.
