Like a lot of Gold Coast locals, you’ve probably been to the Palm Beach Surf Club. But have you heard the legend of the Clubbie Ghost?

On 16 December 1950, a twenty-year-old lifeguard by the name of Desi Quinlan was attacked by a shark whilst swimming at Palm Beach North. He sustained serious injuries to his abdomen and left leg.

Two of the other lifesavers he was swimming with brought him to shore, and carried him back to the clubhouse. Despite being treated by two local doctors at the scene, he died shortly afterwards.

According to local legend, Desi’s ghost continues to be seen at the Surf Club today. This has led many to dub him “The Clubbie Ghost”.

Members of the Gold Coast club have also reported strange things happening at the club at night, like cutlery being moved, picture frames being straightened, and messes tidying themselves up.
