Having grown up in the web development field, living and breathing everything digital and tech since I was ten years old, I’m very passionate about what I do.
Over the years though, I’ve come to notice that there’s a real problem in the digital space, and it’s what I like to call “The (Digital Space) Elephant in the Room”.
More specifically, that “elephant” is all the people out there who are out to make a quick buck with your website, and then move on to the next one.
As someone who truly values and cares for the people I work with, it upsets me that not everybody shares my passion, or has the same respect when dealing with small businesses delving into the digital space for the first time.
As a small business owner myself, I understand the struggle. Your business is your world, and when you’ve put in so much time and effort to get to where you’re at now, handing over the reins can be a nerve-wracking prospect. When you think about it, it’s almost like handing over the keys to your house.
Luckily, there are a few things you can do to get around this “elephant”, and make the process of choosing a website designer a little less stressful. Here are my top three tips:
1. Do your research!
This is the biggest piece of advice that I can give to any small business.
Any time you’re looking at hiring a web designer or SEO specialist, ask to see samples of their previous work, as this will provide you with some idea of the standard of work that you can expect.
Also, ask for testimonials from clients that they’ve worked with previously. This is another great way to gain insight into what they’re actually like to work with.
2. Check their credentials!
In this day and age, anybody can call themselves a web developer or SEO guru, so it’s important that you do due diligence.
Find out more about their employment and educational background. You should also ask about their experience working with small businesses such as your own.
3. Finally, get to know who you’ll be working with.
Personally, before working with any new client, I like to spend time getting to know them. This helps to make sure we are a good fit for each other, and that we share the same expectations and goals moving forward.
Most importantly, this fosters a working relationship that is built on absolute trust – something that is absolutely essential when it comes to your small business.
