Australia’s largest online retailer of delivered flowers and gifts has released its floral forecast for 2022, with a chirpy and cheerful flower topping the list.

Roses Only says the humble sunflower will be the one to watch this year, with its naturally happy disposition helping put 2021 behind us and providing a renewed sense of hope for the year ahead.

CEO Kelly Taggart says the company looks at buying trends from its customer base as well as the international market and the sunflower is the standout.

“Sunflowers are cool again and we think their bright yellow petals and single large heads beam positivity, and that’s something we all need right now,” she says.

“An added bonus is when you buy them, some will be closed meaning you can watch them open and enjoy their gorgeous faces for even longer.”

Roses Only say other flowers in their most popular list for the year ahead include Australian natives, phalaenopsis orchids for the luxe factor, and reflexed roses where the petals of premium roses are folded back to show a fuller ‘bloomed’ looking rose.

The company has also identified the hottest trends in floral arrangements for special events and occasions with a more natural and organic theme emerging.

“Asymmetry and arrangements that are a bit wilder in shape, moving away from the old traditional rounded and tight posy bouquets of recent times, will lead the way this year,” Ms Taggart says.

“Grouped styling of flowers, rather than having them evenly mixed throughout the bouquet, and dyed flowers for that amazing pop of colour will also be very popular.

“We are also seeing an emergence in monochromatic designs, where the foliage is a similar colour tone to the flowers, which is on trend especially for events such as weddings.”
